Thelma Mabel Fisher, 92, of the Evangelical Free Church Home of Boone and formerly of Stratford, died Friday at the home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Calvary United Methodist Church of Stratford, with the Rev. Kent Kastler officiating. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, and from 12:30 p.m. to the time of service at the church.
She was born Jan. 21, 1911 at Lehigh, to Hiram M. and Iva Agnes (Echelberger) Harlow. She attended school at Lehigh. She married LeRoy (Roy) C. Fisher Aug. 31, 1929, at the Methodist Parsonage in Boone.
Thelma wrote for area newspapers for many years in Boone, Stratford and Webster City. She and her husband Roy operated the Fisher Pontiac, Inc. in Stratford from 1929 to 2000, then moved to Boone. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Stratford and she enjoyed baking, sewing and knitting. She also enjoyed boating and fishing at the cabin on North Twin Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, parents and a brother, Melvin E. Harlow. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dalton E. and Kristine M. Fisher of Boone; three grandchildren, Debra Bemben of San Bernardino, Calif., Denise Beckfield and her husband Paul of Verona, Wis., and Lee Fisher of Fort Madison; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Roberta Vegors of Ames; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the family to be used at their discretion. Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story streets, is in charge of the arrangements.
