Thelma Gfeller, 74, Boone, died Tuesday at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services were held Friday at Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman with the Rev. Barbara Bullock officiating. Burial was in Lincoln Township Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Ames, the daughter of Verne and Flossie (Brooks) Kingsbury. She married James Donald Gfeller Oct. 16, 1949, in Luther.

She lived in the Boone and Alleman areas her entire life. She was a sales clerk at Earl May Garden Center before retiring in 1990.

She was a basketball player and cheerleader and participated in band at Napier High School. She was a 48-year member of a local pitch club and was an active member of the Boone Saddle Club as a youth.

She was a charter member of Young Mothers Kountry Club and was past chaplain and regent of the DAR. While wintering in Wesleco, Texas, she tutored students.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Gfeller of Ely, Minn., and Randy Gfeller of Ackley; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Duane Palubicki of Dent, Minn.; one sister, Pauline Book of Ames; one sister-in-law, Bonne Kingsbury of Boone; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Carroll Kingsbury; and one sister, Donna O'Grady.

Memorials may be given to the Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home of Slater was in charge of arrangements.
