Virgil Burke Jr., 48, 1003 Monona St., died at the Boone County Hospital Monday from complications of diabetes. Funeral services were held Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where Bishop Brent Buxton officiated. Burial was in the Mineral Ridge Cemetery in Ridgeport.
He was born in Boone on March 22, 1955, the son of Virgil and Selma (Johnson) Burke. He attended Boone High School. He married Vicki Thomas in Boone.
For 23 years, he was employed as a custodian at the Towers at Iowa State University, taking a disability retirement due to health reasons. He loved the sport of car racing and for many years was a race car driver at the Boone Speedway. He also enjoyed pool and belonged to a pool league, and he enjoyed helping his son fix his car.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerry. He is survived by his wife Vicki; one son, Robert, of Boone; one daughter, Rebecca Burke, of Boone; two sisters, Donna Street of Woodward and Annette Burke of Boone; and a sister-in-law, Veronica Burke of Boone.
Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
