Wallace H. Hammond, Jr., 81, of 504 South Boone Street, Boone, Iowa passed away at his home on Saturday evening, September 10, 2005.

He was born on August 25, 1924, in Council Bluffs, Iowa the son of Wallace H. and Leona (Setzer) Hammond. At an early age, he moved to Boone with his parents.

On January 4, 1948, he married Marjorie Warnke at Carroll, Iowa.

Wallace was a 1942 graduate of Boone High School. In November of 1945, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Medical Corp in France during World War II until his discharge in November of 1948.

He was employed as a police officer for the City of Boone until the early 1960's, when he became a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired. After retirement, he owned and operated his own wood working business, Mar-Wal Woodworking, making display cases for Archway Cookie Company. Wallace was an avid duck, goose and pheasant hunter and enjoyed fishing, especially at his summer cabin in Canada.

He was a member of the American Legion.

His father W.H. Hammond, Sr., step-mother, and a half-brother, Charles Hammond preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Boone, Iowa, 3 daughters Patty Boucher of Van Meter, Iowa, Marsha Hammond of Boone, Diana Gillespie of Van Meter, Iowa, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 sister Marjorie Moffitt and her husband Joe of Boone, half-brother Robert Hammond and his wife Ardith of Boone, several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Wednesday afternoon, September 14th at 1:30 p.m. at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone, with Chaplain Henrietta Kharenbeek officiating.

Interment with full military honors conducted by the Veterans Council of Boone will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
