Walter Smalley, 76, of 1827 190th St., Boone, died Thursday of a heart ailment at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at the Church of the Open Bible in Boone, with the Rev. Phil Waldo officiating. Later, his body will be cremated and a graveside service and burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Walnut Grove Cemetery southeast of Ames.

He was born in Boone County July 19, 1927, the son of Virgil and Edith (Keenan) Smalley. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1945. He married Betty (Hill) Harker in Indianola on Jan. 24, 1953.

He farmed in Boone County and also raised cattle. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the West Central Co-op.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-son, Marion Harker. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ray Smalley and his wife Belinda of Cambridge and Bill Smalley and his wife Cindy of Pilot Mound; a daughter, Candie McAlpine of Boone; three step-sons, Dennis Harker of West Des Moines, Daryl Harker of Perry and Gary Harker and his wife Jingle of Warner Robins, Ga.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; six step-great-granchildren; and an aunt and uncle, Howard and Fern Smalley.

Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday where the family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the funeral chapel from 8 to 10 a.m. and then at the church from noon until the time of service.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
