Walter W. "Bill" Galloway departed this life Friday, January 20, 2006. He was born August 21, 1927 in Superior, Nebraska to Walter C. and Catherine (Fallis) Galloway. He lived his early years in Oklahoma before moving to Hastings, Nebraska with his parents. He graduated from Hastings High School after which he enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948, serving in the Asiatic Pacific during WWII as a Metalsmith Second on the USS Iowa and the USS Columbus. He was in the Naval Reserves until 1953.

After telegraphers school, he began working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 37 years starting as a Station Agent and as a Dispatcher until his retirement in 1992 from the Chicago Transportation Center. After retirement, he drove the train crews for Cimarron Coach of Iowa and served as manager for several years.

Bill married Joan Orel on October 27, 1957 in Winner, South Dakota where they lived until moving to Norfolk, Nebraska. The couple lived there for 11 years before moving to Boone, Iowa in 1972 where they have lived for the past 34 years. One son, John William, was born to this union on February 12, 1968 in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #0056, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #817, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, American Train Dispatchers Association, Union Pacific Employees Club, Iowa Veteran Association of the USS Iowa, Railroad Historical Society and AARP.

Bill was a devoted and loving husband and father. He enjoyed his family and friends, his home and yard, the animals and birds he fed, reading and traveling with his wife. He was a true handyman and could fix most anything.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan, his son John Galloway and his wife Lori of Boone, two step-grandchildren Jeremy and Brandon, a sister-in-law Zoldene Martensen of Parkston, South Dakota, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Charles W. and a second brother Harold James, mother-in-law, three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

Services will be held on Tuesday morning, January 24th at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boone with Rev. Andrea Kraushaar officiating.

Interment with full military honors conducted by the Veterans Council of Boone will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday morning at the Church from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service.

The family will be present at the Stark-Welin Chapel on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to greet friends.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
