Richard "Dick" Olson, 74, a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, and formerly of 337 South Marshall St., Boone, died Monday at Community Hospital in Los Gatos, Calif., of heart failure. He was born March 12, 1926, in Boone, the son of Adrian and Mary (Kiddie) Olson. He married Avenelle Johnson May 23, 1948, in Ogden. He married Lois Sturtz Crisp April 15, 1977, in Ogden.
He was a graduate of Boone High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper with the U.S. Army 82nd Air Borne. From 1959 to 1988, he was employed as a letter carrier and later as a clerk by the U.S. Postal Service in Boone. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 56, V.F.W. Post No. 817, and B.P.O. Elks No. 563. His hobbies included bowling and in earlier years he played in a slow pitch softball league.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife in 1990; and one brother, David. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Neil Olson of Boone, and Kyle and Lorrie Olson of Campbell, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Maureen and Lyle Stoneburner, and Janelle and Bryan Hilsabeck, all of Boone, and Andrea Headley of Urbandale; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his first wife.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Boone, with the Rev. Dan Solomon officiating. Burial with military honors by the Boone Veterans Council will be in Linwood Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, Boone, Friday from noon to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. An Elks service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Visitation continues Saturday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of service.
Memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity or Augustana Lutheran Church.
Schroeder Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
