Grace Mable Smelcer, 92, a resident of the Madrid Home, Madrid, and formerly of Boone, died Saturday at the home of complications of a stroke. She had been a resident of the home since June 6, 2002. She was born Feb. 28, 1910, in Arcadia, MO, the daughter of Henry Stanley and Gertrude Amanda Chapman (Teuni) Tooley. She married Lewis Collins Smelcer Jan. 31, 1953, in Blue Earth, MN.
She moved to Boone from Red Mesa, CO in 1937 and lived in Boone for several years before moving to Fort Dodge. While living in Fort Dodge, she worked as a nurses aide at Mercy Hospital for several years. She moved back to Boone in the early 1970s and worked as a nurses aide at the Eastern Star Masonic Home for eight to 10 years. She also was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Boone. Her hobbies included spending time with her family, especially going roller skating with her children, quilting, gardening and square dancing.
She was preceded in death by his parents; her husband; her infant twin daughters; one son, Harold; and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons and three daughters-in-law, Melvin David and Betty Mitchell of Mason City, LaVerne Earl and Millie Mitchell of Jerome, ID and Joyce Mitchell of Boone; two daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita May and Richard Hayes of Boone, Elizabeth Ann (Sinclair) and Raymond Stanfield of Boone and Joyce Mitchell of Boone; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Teuni Tooley of Salt Lake City, UT; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Olive Lee of Red Mesa, CO and Virginia and Afton Cheney of Edin, UT; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Brent Buxton officiating. Burial will be in Boone Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, Tuesday from 1 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Wednesday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
