Marvin B. Simonson, 76, 837 Dryden St., Stratford, died Friday at his home of complications from cancer. He was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Stratford, the son of John A. and Lillie (Wahman) Simonson. He married LaVonne "Bonnie" Chally June 16, 1946, in Stratford. She died in April of 1979 and he married Alyce Nelson Chally June 24, 1986, in Las Vegas, NV.
He was a graduate of Stratford High School and a veteran of World War II, serving as a diesel mechanic with the U.S. Navy. He was a mechanic for Stratford Implement for many years and was a rural mail carrier for 22 years before retiring in 1990. He was a former mayor of Stratford. He was a member of the Stratford Baptist Church, American Legion Frederick W. Sonksen Post No. 576, Bulldog Club of America and the Stratford Gun Club. He was breeder of champion bulldogs and his hobbies included riding BMW motorcycles and trapshooting with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and one sister, Thelma Hinman. Survivors include his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ron Steward of Boone; two grandchildren, Jen Ameson and her husband, Tom, of Marshalltown, and Erik Murken of Boone; two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Olivia Ameson of Marshalltown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Inez Simonson of Stratford and Earl and Annette Simonson of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stratford Baptist Church with the Rev. James Mead and the Rev. Bob Kosbau officiating. Burial with full military honors by the Frederick W. Sonksen Post No. 576 of Stratford will be in Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford.
Friends may call at Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services.
