Aloysius "Ollie" Wirth, 88, 105 Rothmoor Drive, Gilbert, died Friday at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames of complications from pneumonia and liver cancer. He was born April 23, 1912, in rural Gilbert, the son of Peter and Amelia (Baldus) Wirth. He married Evelyn Jensen April 26, 1938, in Nevada.
He graduated from Story City High School in 1932. He and his wife lived near Gilbert and he farmed in Boone and Story counties. He also worked as a shipping clerk from Kearn's Furniture in Roland until his retirement in 1977. He and his wife moved to Gilbert in 1978. His hobbies included playing cards, and having coffee at the Gilbert Co-op.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, William and Raymond Charles; two daughters, Joyce Geerdes and Annette Leach; two brothers; six sisters; and three grandchildren; Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Phyllis and Ryan and Vicki, all of Nevada, Jim and Alyce of Story City, Don and Sharon of Ames, and Al and Sandy of Eagle Grove; one daughter, Rosemary Wirth of Brookfield, Conn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward "Bud" and Arlene Wirth of Roland; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Wirth of Huxley; two sons-in-law, Dan Leach of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Bert Geerdes of Ankeny; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Saint's Peter and Paul Catholic Church north of Gilbert with the Rev. Howard Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Saint's Peter and Paul Cemetery.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, from 8 to 9 a.m. today.
