E.E. "Andy" Andrews, 92, formerly of 229 South Greene St. Boone, died Saturday at the Eastern Star Masonic Home, Boone, of congestive heart failure. He was born Sept. 18, 1908, in Keokuk County, the son of Roy and Alice (Lisk) Andrews. He married Leola Moore, May 26, 1934, in Maquoketa.
He graduated from Delta High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, and his masters from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He spent 42 years in public education, beginning his teaching career in rural Keokuk County. He served as superintendent of schools in Elwood, Clarksville, and North English from 1946 to 1957, when he and his family moved to Panora, where he served as superintendent until 1960. In 1960, he accepted a position as superintendent of United Community Schools which he held until his retirement in 1974. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant in the United States Navy in Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, Boone, Masonic Order Mt. Olive Lodge No. 79 AF & AM, Boone High Twelve Club, Rotary International, American Legion, and American Association of Retired Persons. He had served on the board of directors of the Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union, and the Heartland Area Education Agency. He served on the Boone Veterans Council, AARP Executive Council, and as commander and financial officer of the Boone American Legion. He also served as president of the Iowa-South Dakota Association of High Twelve Clubs. His hobbies included attending auctions, woodworking, and refinishing furniture.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two infant sons, Jack and Jerry. Survivors include his wife; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Jane and Bob Hedden of Green Valley, Ariz., Judy and Jim Hunt of Hot Springs Village, Ark., Jan and Bob Johnson of Boone, and Vicki Andrews-Pietz and Tom Pietz of Boone; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John and Judy Andrews of Mahomet, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Alma Andrews of New Sharon; one sister, Evelyn Robbins of Rose Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Augustana Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel Solomon officiating. Burial with military honors by the Boone Veterans Council will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel today from 3 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues Wednesday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of service.
Memorials may be given to the DMACC-Boone Campus Foundation Scholarship Fund.
