Soren Pershing Olson 1918-2001

Soren Pershing Olson, 82, Clear Lake, and formerly of Horseshoe Bend, AR, died Monday at Heritage Care Center in Mason City. He was born Sept. 25, 1918, near Scarville, the son of Severt and Anna (Mykleby) Olson. He married Helen Lomen Sept. 1, 1946, in Clear Lake.

He served with the United States Army from Feb. 4, 1942 until Nov. 19, 1945, serving as a member of the 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II. He also served 29 months in central Europe as a mail clerk. He was employed in the Clear Lake Buttertop Baker before purchasing his own bakery in Hampton. In 1967, he purchased a bakery in Boone. He retired in 1980 and he and his wife moved to Horseshoe Bend, AR. The couple moved to Clear Lake in October of 2000 and he became a resident of Heritage Care Center in Mason City in March of this year after having been diagnosed with Alzheiner's disease. He was a member of the Shephered of the Hill Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend, AR, and was member of the Kiwanis club for approximately 40 years. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, gardening, playing bridge and horseback riding.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one infant great-grandson, Grant Oppedahl. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey and Jack Knight of Boone and Susan and David Knippel of Ames; two granddaughters, Christine Knight of Ames and Angie Oppedahl and her husband, Jon, of Cedar Rapids; four grandaughters, Kari and Cassie Olson and Anna and Laura Oppedahl; two grandsons, Eric and Daniel Knippel; four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James A. and Audrey Olson of Blue Earth, MN and Marvin O. and Norma Olson of Des Moines; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and frineds.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial with graveside military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake or the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend, AR.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake is in charge of arrangements.
