Opal Sorber, 89, Dayton, died Friday at Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton. She was born March 30, 1912, in Spencer, NE, the daughter of George Caswell Sr. and Clara Belle (Moffitt) Bennett. She married Edwin H. Sorber Oct. 25, 1931, in Dallas, SD.

She attended country schools in South Dakota. In 1935, she and her husband moved to Idaho and then moved to Milton Freewater, OR, where her husband worked in the Box Factory. In 1938, the couple moved to Iowa and began farming. They lived in the Jamaica, Perry, Boone and Ogden areas. In 1949, they moved to a farm east of Dayton. She was a housewife her entire life and entered Grandview Health Care Center on Jan. 15, 1996. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Boone and her hobbies included cooking.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Nov. 15,1993; two sons, Norman at birth and Harlan Sorber in 1975; one grandson, Brent Sorber on Nov. 4, 2000; three sisters, Beulah Schrader, Bonnie Fairchild and Lila Sorber; and one brother, George Bennett, Jr. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Velma and Fred Iles of Badger, Judi and Glen Anderson of Story City, and Phyllis and Ron Bender of Ankeny; four sons and and three daughters-in-law, Marvin Sorber of Dayton, Loren and Pat Sorber of Wildomar, CA, Mylin and Jill Sorber of Bennett, CO and Vernon and Nancy Sorber of Thornton, CO; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy Vaughn of Burke, SD and Audrey and Charles Craven of Nevada.

Funeral services were held Monday at United Methodist Church in Dayton with the Rev. John J. Hembry and the Rev. David Lincoln officiating. Burial was in Pilot Mound Cemetery in Pilot Mound.

Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.

Carson Funeral Homes of Dayton was in charge of arrangements.
