E.T. "Mick" Wittmer, 78, formerly of 422 S. Greene St., Boone, died Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone of complications from a stroke. He had been a resident of the home since August of this year. He was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Boone County, the son of Henry and Clara (Schaffer) Wittmer. He married Mary Bjorkman Sept. 6, 1946, in Boone.
He was a 1942 graduate of Boone High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre. He was employed as a shift foreman for Northern Natural Gas for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone, the American Legion, the V.F.W., Elks and the Boone Golf & Country Club. His hobbies included playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially attending their athletic events. He also enjoyed wintering in Phoenix, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Nikki Wittmer of Ames and Mark and Cathy Wittmer of Pella; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Augustana Lutheran Church with the Rev. Doug Duin officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials may be given to Augustana Lutheran Church or the Evangelical Free Church Home.
