Gayle Irwin Westrum, 75, 180 Nature Road, Boone, died Monday at his home of complications of cancer. He was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Stratford, the son of Martin and Mabel (Angstrom) Westrum. He married Betty Grabau Sept. 1,1946, in Boone.

He attended rural schools in Hamilton County and graduated from Stratford High School in 1942. He farmed in the Boone area his entire life and was a veteran of World war II, serving with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was baptized at the Stratford Evangelical Lutheran Church and was confirmed at South Marion Methodist Church. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone and served on the Stratford Elevator Board. His hobbies included cultivating fruit and nut trees.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Eugene "Buss" Westrum in February of 1999; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Westrum in August of 1993. Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Marilyn Westrum of Boone, and Bryon and Eileen Westrum, also of Boone; one daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Dave McKenzie of Boone; five grandchildren; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Gerald Westrum of Stratford, and Lyle and Alice Westrum of Boone; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marietta and Ted Grabau of Boone, and Marily and Dick Palmer of Vancouver, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Arlys Westrum of Stratford; and two aunts and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone with the Rev. Lindsay Watkins officiating. Burial with the presentation of the flag by the Boone Veterans Council was in Mineral Ridge Cemetery north of Boone.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Hour in St. Louis, Mo., or to Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Wis.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
