Carl Fred Ehlers, junior hydrographic and geodetic engineer, died suddenly on November 8, while on duty as chief of party engaged on shore work near Ocean City, Maryland. Born in Ogden, Iowa, on December 24, 1902, he received his early education at the public and high schools of his home town and graduated in 1924 from the Iowa State College with the degree of Bachelor of Science in civil engineering.
He was appointed in the Coast Survey on August 15, 1924, and because of his enthusiasm and industry and the painstaking care with which he did all of his work, rendered valuable service. At the time of his death he was on his first assignment as chief of party.
