Douglas M. Groat 1947-1967

Feb. 7, 1967, Douglas M. Groat, 20, a sophomore at Drake University was found dead in the basement of his parents’ home at 627 South Boone Street.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Groat, who were away on vacation to Mexico at the time. Dr. Greco said death was caused by hanging. The body was discovered by Larry Edwards, an employee of the Groat Implement Company here who was making periodic checks of the house, and by neighbor, Mrs. Mary Sayre, police said. The victim, a graduate of Boone High School turned 20 on Monday, February 6th.

Funeral services for the late Douglas M. Groat will be held on Friday, February 10th at the Schroeder Funeral Home at 1:30 P.M. Father Thomas S. Hulme, a former Pastor at the Grace Episcopal Church in Boone, and now Pastor of the Grace Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids will officiate. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be at the Linwood Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick F. Groat; a brother, Frederick W. Groat, who attended Harvard Business Administration School at Boston, Mass. and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. H. L. Ebhart of Council Bluffs.

Memorials may be given to a Boone High School scholarship fund established in memory of Douglas M. Groat.
