Phoebe B. Hellwege died Monday, February 13, 2006, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 18, 2006, at the Augustana Lutheran Church, 309 S. Greene Street in Boone.
Interment will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa.
Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Friday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Saturday morning at the Church from 8:30 A.M. until time of service.
The family will be present at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Friday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. to greet friends.
Phoebe Benson Hellwege was born February 8, 1912, in Rock Island, Illinois, the youngest of four children born to S.P. (Swan) Benson and Lydia (Seaberg) Benson. When Phoebe was a pre-schooler her family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where her father was employed by The Economy Advertising Company. A few years later her father established his own business as a bookbinder.
Phoebe attended Iowa City High School and the State University of Iowa, graduating with honors from both schools (Valedictorian and Phi Beta Kappa). In September, 1934, she began a year's training as a dietetic intern at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After two years on the staff there she returned to Iowa City to accept a position as dietitian in charge of doctors' dining room and nurses' cafeteria at the University Hospital.
On August 27, 1939, she married Paul E. Hellwege, then a young lawyer in Boone. While living in Boone Phoebe has for sixty six years been an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church, singing in the choir and holding several offices in the Womens' groups. She was president of the Madrid Home Guild four years, local president of Chapter DD, PEO, Hypathia Club and Boone County Hospital Auxiliary, with more than thirty seven years of active service in the Auxiliary. At Phoebe's suggestion, Paul and Phoebe established substantial scholarships at the Iowa Law School and at an ELCA church college for Boone County residents.
Phoebe was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother. Surviving are her husband, Judge Paul E. Hellwege, one daughter, Janice Malmin of Woodbury, MN and one son, David P. Hellwege of Tulsa, OK. Also two nephews, Rev. Don Benson of Waterloo, IA and Ted Benson of Shalimar, FL, Ted's wife Jane, and children, Serena, Jennifer and Christopher. Also a sister-in-law, Wilma Bennett and her family, Twila Torres and daughter Kristina Hall, Karla Jenkins and husband, Walter, Jr., and children, Amy, Danny, and Jessie and many friends throughout the state.
Memorials may be given to Augustana Lutheran Church Foundation to be designated for the Hellwege Scholarship.
Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
