Independence Conservative 15 April 1931
Gilbertville, IA--Michael and Elizabeth Fischels, who had shared life in Germany and in pioneer Iowa, shared death and its solemnities and together received the honors of the church here a few days ago.
They died almost simultaneously--his wife's death following that of Fischels by two days. Both succumbed to pneumonia. His funeral was postponed two days that they might have a common requiem.
Their pallbearers were 12 grandson, six for each. Those for Mr. Fischels were: Andrew Fischels, Waterloo; Joe Kayser, Albert Kayser, Independence; Louis Schmitz, Leonard Schmitz, Peter Fischels, Gilbertville. Mrs. Fischels' casket bearers were: Joseph, Francis and Leo Fischels, and George Schmitz, Gilbertville; Lawrence and Arthur Kayser, Independence.
Mr. Fischels was born Aug. 12, 1845, in Germany. Elizabeth Brick Fischels was born there on Jan. 27, 1850. Their marriage occurred in their native land in 1874 and five years later they came to the United States with their three children, settling here.
The surviving daughter and sons are: Mrs. Katherine Kayser, Michael Fischels, Jr., Independence; Mathias, John and Nick Fischels, Gilbertville. A daughter, Mrs. Margaret Schmitz died in 1910.
A grand and noble life was theirs, of over eighty years. Tho sorrows came, they murmured not, a smile shone thru their tears. And thus it was that hand and hand thru life's weary way they journeyed on with cheerfulness to that perfect day--Waterloo Courier.
