DROPS DEAD ON STREET

Jacob Ayers, A Prominent Farmer Expires Suddenly Today

Had Just Entered Carriage To Return To His Home

Physicians Give Cause As Valvular Heart Trouble
Jacob Ayres, a farmer living one mile south of Gilbertville, dropped dead in front of the DeSoto hotel at 3:20 this afternoon.
Ayres came to town this afternoon with a companion and had just got into his buggy to go to the east side to meet his companion.
A friend was talking to him a moment before and remarked that he looked pale and ill. Mr. Ayres said he was not feeling very well and prepared to go. A few moments later the friend, whose name could not be learned, returned to the buggy which had not yet started and found Mr. Ayres in a dying condition. The unfortunate man gasped once or twice after his return and expired.
He was taken to the DeSoto hotel and at the time of going to press an effort was being made to locate the companion who accompanied him to the city.
Ayres was a well-to-do farmer and is quite well known in Waterloo.
The physicians who were called state that he probably died of valvular heart trouble as he was afflicted with that disease.
Deceased was 35 years of age. The remains will be held here pending instructions from the relatives or friends.

Waterloo Courier 1 October 1902
