Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Catherine Schons, 78, of Gilbertville, will be 9 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception church in Gilbertville. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. William Cremer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Schons, a lifelong resident of Black Hawk County, died 9:45 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis Hospital. Death was caused by complications of a heart ailment.
She was born June 9, 1882, the daughter of Peter and Catherine Schares Bovy in Eagle Center.
She was married to Peter J. Schons on Jan. 14, 1903, at St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel church at Eagle Center. The couple farmed in Eagle Twp. until 1938, when they moved to Gilbertville.
Mrs. Schons is survived by her husband at home; two sons, Bernard and Gerald of Eagle Twp. and two daughters, Mrs. William Staebell, Jesup, and Mrs. Ralph Mullen, La Porte City.
Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and three great grand children; four sisters, Mrs Margaret Frost, Hoven, S. D.; Mrs. Anna Fischels and Mrs. Barbara Fischels, Gilbertville, and Mrs. Katherine Fischels, Independence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
The remains will be at O'Keefe and Towne funeral home until 2 p.m. Sunday when they will be taken to the family home in Gilbertville.
Rosaries will be recited Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A third rosary will be recited Sunday at 8 p.m. at the family home in Gilbertville.
