Edward Lee Stachovic

Edward Lee Stachovic (Ed) was born in Bettendorf, Iowa, on January 22, 1931, son of Jon and Margaret Stachovic. He grew up in Davenport, Iowa. Ed attended Sacred Heart Grade School, graduated from St. Ambrose Academy (now part of Assumption High School) in 1948. He attended St. Ambrose College (now University) before transferring to the University of Iowa where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration. Following his graduation as an engineer, Ed served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps for two years, being honorably discharged in June 1955.

On November 5, 1955, he was united in marriage to Jean Louise Wulff at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa. He, then, began his 38 year career with Deere & Co in manufacturing engineering and facilities management in Moline, IL; Horicon, WI; and retiring from the John Deere Product Engineering Center in January 1993.

Ed was elected as Mayor of Cedar Falls, serving for three terms before retiring in January of 2000. Active in Cedar Falls as a volunteer, he served as Chair of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce, as a Trustee of the Cedar Falls Utilities, Chair of the Cedar Falls Historical Society, and more recently as Chair of the Sartori Memorial Hospital Board and Foundation, and as a member of the Covenant Medical Center Board. His hobbies included wood carving of birds and fish and playing trumpet. He was a member of the John Deere Third Octave Band (now the Cedar Valley Big Band), the Dixie Deeres, the All Iowa Veterans Band, and more recently, the New Horizons Band.

Ed passed away at the Deery Suites of Cedar Falls, on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jean; daughters, Ann (Kim) Qual of Iowa City, Gail (Ed Flack) Stachovic of Cedar Falls and Linda (Mike) Thode of Cedar Falls; his brother, Bob Stachovic of St. Louis, MO; and also by his grandchildren: Emily (Joshua), Nikolai, and Spencer Qual; Tory (Cole) and Keely Flack; and Jack Thode. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven Stachovic; a daughter, Karen Stachovic; brothers, John (WWII) and Walter; and a sister, Florence. Ed attended St. Patrick Church in Cedar Falls.

Edward’s Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am on Thursday, February 27, 2020, at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Cedar Falls with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home of Cedar Falls and one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be a rosary service beginning at 7:00 on Wednesday evening.
