She earned an Accounting degree from Hawkeye Community College. She later perused an education to become a Dental Hygienist. She was a hygienist for close to 30 years with Dr. David Bottke in Cedar Falls and later Dr. Keith Whittemore in Waterloo.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by the love of her life for 27 years, Lyle Coen, of Cedar Falls; her brother, David (Kathern) Schemmel of Waterloo; her nephew, Travis Schemmel of Waterloo; her niece, Angela (Michael) Van Gorder of Ankeny; great-nieces and nephews: Erika, Evan, Austin, Madison and Jeremy; also by the children of Lyle Coen: Kristina Bachmann of South Dakota and Jeffrey (Andrea) Coen of Cedar Falls, and their boxer, Rocky, who was Debbie’s four-legged buddy.

Debbie enjoyed traveling here and abroad. Debbie and Lyle visited Ireland together. She also traveled to Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand. For a surprise present, Debbie took her niece Angela on a trip to Las Vegas for her 21st birthday to see Celine Dion.

One of her favorite past times was shopping and she loved all things that were glitzy and glamorous including clothing, jewelry, shoes and purses. Debbie also loved to cook and will be remembered for the annual hors d’oeuvres extravaganza buffet she prepared at her home during the holidays.
