On February 20, 2020, Elaine Pfalzgraf left the family and community she loved. A lifelong resident of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Elaine served her community at the local, state, and national level. She served on the Cedar Falls City Council as Councilmember and Mayor pro-tem for 24 years, was a UNI instructor of social work, the co-founder of the College Hill Neighborhood Association, and served on more that 30 state and local boards and commissions.
Elaine was the President of the Iowa League of Municipalities and served on the Governor's Task Force on Homelessness and the National League of Cities Board. Elaine retired from the Family Service League after 24 years of providing social work.
Elaine was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on January 31, 1944. She went to college at UNI and later earned masters degrees in Social Work from the University of Iowa and Mental Health from UNI.
Elaine is survived by her husband of 55 years, George Pfalzgraf; her children, Amy (Jeff Mitchell) Pfalzgraf of Virginia and Chris (Brenda Pechman) Pfalzgraf of Ohio; and her grandchildren Molly Mitchell and Ethan Mitchell of Virginia.
Elaine’s funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church of Cedar Falls. Her visitation will be from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home of Cedar Falls.
