Biography--

Stanley D. Whelchel, 82, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born July 24, 1935 in Angus, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Lucile (Griffith) Whelchel. Stan married Theora Mae Schimberg on June 25, 1958 at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Rock Valley/Sioux Center, Iowa. He was a 1953 graduate of Perry High School and a 1961 graduate of Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). Stan served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1957, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

He taught biology and anatomy in the Waterloo Schools (Orange, Central and West High Schools), retiring in 1996. Stan then was a substitute teacher for several years at Hudson High School in Hudson, Iowa.

He was a member of Waterloo Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, National Biology Teachers Association, National Science Teachers Association, Iowa Academy of Science, Iowa Science Teachers Association, Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, Phi Delta Kappa, Marine Corps League, Marine Corps Association, AMVETS and the Cedar Falls Kiwanis Club.

Stan received the following honors: lifetime honor of being a Marine, 1971 Conservation Educator of the Year, 1976 Outstanding Biology Teacher for Iowa, 1990 Gold Star Teacher Award, 1993 Dedicated Service Award West High School, and the 1996 Phi Delta Kappan of the Year Award.

He is survived by his brother, Larry (Marlene) Whelchel; his sister-in-law, Suzanne Timmer; five nieces, Virginia Browning, Susan (Kevin) Olson, Rev. Kelli (Rev. Bob) Fisher, Kristin Timmer and Patty Whelchel; a nephew, Kyle Timmer; many great-nieces and nephews; and his extended family.

Stan was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hudson, with burial in Kingsley, Iowa at a later date. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church.
