Gene Alan Wardenburg, 71, went to his Heavenly home on January 31, 2018, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, from 4 to 7 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 8, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Inurnment with military rites conducted by the Dysart American Legion will be at Keystone Cemetery.

Gene was born on December 11, 1946, in Vinton, the son of Milford and Ethel (Feuerbach) Wardenburg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone. Gene graduated from Keystone High School in 1965 and served his country in the Air Force from 1969 to 1973. He graduated from Northeast Missouri State in 1974.

On January 10, 1970, Gene was united in marriage to Bonnie Brunssen at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Van Horne. He retired from Union Community Schools in 2014. Gene loved to visit and reminisce with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, watching Hawkeye games, and going to the casinos. His greatest joys were his grandchildren and he was so proud of each of his boys.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gene is survived by his loving wife; three sons, Layne (Mindy) of Noblesville, Indiana, Derek of Waterloo, and Wyatt (Sarah) of Marion; three grandchildren, Mariah, Gracie, and Knox; two sisters, Wendy (Keith) Junge and Cathy (Jim) Buch; three aunts; an uncle; Bonnie’s brothers, sisters, and their spouses; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.
