Phillip “Butch” Kuriger Jr.

Phillip Karl “Butch” Kuriger Jr. was born on July 31, 1956 in Waterloo, Iowa, to Phillip Sr and Thelma (Jones) Kuriger. He spent his life defying the odds. Doctors told him that he wouldn’t live past the age of five, but he lived a thriving life until the age of 61. He was told that he wouldn’t be able to speak; however, there were times his family would pay him to be quiet.

He was also told that he would never be able to ride a bike; however, he not only rode a bike but he drove a moped. Butch loved to go to Wisconsin and fish. He also loved eating McDonald’s fish sandwiches and all kinds of ice cream. Butch Kuriger loved his church and the church loved him right back. He would sing loudly every Sunday at Prince of Peace and looked forward to singing Silent Night every Christmas Eve.

There wasn’t a person he met that he didn’t always remember and everyone got hugs when greeted. Birthdays were important to Butch and he never failed to remind you of the date. He also invited everyone to attend. Butch participated in Special Olympics and received many ribbons and trophies for his bowling skills. Butch Kuriger worked many years at Goodwill and Northstar.

Phillip “Butch” Kuriger died on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the age of 61 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Kuriger; and sister, Debbie Turner.

Phillip is survived by his father, Phillip Kuriger Sr.; one brother, Brad (Katrin) Kuriger of Waterloo; three sisters: Vickie (Jim) Bone of Monticello, Tammie (Dean) Fairbanks of Evansdale, and Jeannette (Dennis) Cunningham of Colo; along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews that dearly loved their uncle.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
