Biography--

William D. Swaim, 91, of Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Tucson, Arizona, died at Friendship Village Health Pavilion on Sunday, August 20, 2017.

Bill was born August 24, 1925, in Omaha, NE, the son of Donald and Willa (McCullough) Swaim. He married "Eddie" E. Kay Karcher June 12, 1949 in Iowa City.

He graduated from the University of Iowa with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1949 and a MS in Organic Chemistry in 1950. Bill worked as a Research Engineer for American Can Company in Maywood, IL 1950-1953; Agair Equipment Company in Chicago 1953-1955; and created Hubill division in Davenport, IA 1955-1956. He purchased and incorporated Hubill in 1956. He served there as President and Chairman, semi retiring as Chairman in 1991. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 in the European and Pacific Theaters.

Bill was a Charter Member of the Association of Independent Representatives (1975-1991), and National Chairman in 1979, 1983, and 1988. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Bettendorf, Iowa, Chamber of Commerce in 1965, Youth for Christ Mississippi Valley in Bettendorf from 1980 to 1991, and Rotary International Board of Directors from 1987 to 1988.

He was a member of American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, International Material Management Society, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Fraternity. He was the author of “Tonto” battery management software.

Survivors include his wife, Eddie of Waterloo; son, William D. (Jean) Swaim, Jr. of Bettendorf; daughter, Gina (Paul) Greene of Waterloo; son, Alan (Carol) Swaim of Arvada, CO; son, David (Melissa) Swaim of Indianapolis, IN; nine grandchildren: Kari (Brandan) Taber, Lucas Greene, Molly (Brian) Bishop, Tyler Greene, Autumn Swaim, Miles Swaim, Travis Swaim, Jennifer (Mike) Martin, Christina (Devin) Sielschott; five great grandchildren: Annalise Hoty, Laila Hoty, Alexander Martin, James Martin, and Wesley Bishop; and brother, Robert (Donna) Swaim of Tucson, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
