Obituary for Anna Maria McDaniel

Anna Maria McDaniel, 94, of Friendship Village, formerly of Janesville, died Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Unity Point Health Allen Hospital.

She was born May 29, 1923 in Livorno, Italy, daughter of Georgio and Concetta Bini Gherardi.

She married Ralph E. McDaniel March 3, 1946 in Livorno, Italy. He died January 17, 2011. Anna was employed by the Fiat Corp. in Livorno, a sales clerk for Arnold’s Dress Shop and then worked as an Italian interpreter for Deere and Company.

Survivors include a son, Robert (Holly) McDaniel of Evansdale; two daughters, Sandy (David) Slack of Traer and LuAnna (Mark) Andera of Cedar Falls; a daughter-in-law, Beth Anne McDaniel of LeClaire; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, one nephew, a special cousin and their families in Italy.

Preceded in death by: her husband; her son, Ralph E. McDaniel, Jr.; a brother, Mario; a sister, Ida Zanchi; and a niece Sandra Blandina.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 29 at Bethany Bible Chapel, 4507 Rownd St., Cedar Falls, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Public visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also for one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to Bethany Bible Chapel and Friendship Village Pavilion.

For nine months during World War II, Anna was held at the Prinz-Albrecht Concentration Camp. She proudly became an American citizen on June 7, 1999. Anna had an unbreakable spirit and people were drawn to her wit and humor.

She was devoted to her family, her country and her Lord. She loved fishing, being with family, friends and her beloved dog Pepe.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Friendship Village Pavilion for their love and care of Mom.
