Darlene J. Mastain, 84, of Waterloo, died Monday, August 7, 2017, at NorthCrest Specialty Care of pancreatic cancer.
She was born June 3, 1933, in Bremer County, daughter of Henry and Sophia Schumacher Kehe. She married Robert Mastain on August 12, 1956, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Denver.
Darlene graduated from Readlyn High School in 1952 and from the University of Northern Iowa (Iowa State Teachers College) in 1954 with a two-year degree in elementary education. She taught at Jewett Elementary in Evansdale from 1954 to 1957 and later worked in the Hudson School Kitchen and at Harmony House, Waterloo.
She was a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Hudson where she taught Sunday School, was active in quilting circle, and helped with funeral luncheons. She also was a member of Farm Bureau, where she was women's chair and secretary/treasurer.
Survived by: her husband; a daughter, Kathy Williams of Waterloo; two sons, Kenneth of Waterloo and Scott of Des Moines; a son in law, John Williams of Atkinson, Ill.; a stepgrandson, Michael (Mahlon) Williams; and a sister, Elvira Hebell of Denver.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Virgil (Joyce) Kehe; two sisters, Bernice (John) Zingg Elsie Kehe; and a brother-in-law, Everett Hebell.
It was a great joy to her that her former students contacted her. She loved to visit with family and friends.Source: Locke Funeral home website
