Biography--

Verlee Mae (Swanson) Hein, 85, formerly a resident of Waterloo, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at her home in Durham, North Carolina.

She was the daughter of Herman C. Swanson and Ethel (Lingren) Swanson of Boxholm, Iowa. She was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on January 2, 1932, graduated from Boxholm Consolidated School, attended Boone Junior College and received her BS in Home Economics from Iowa State University in 1953. She married Clair E. Hein in Boxholm on March 21, 1953. They were married for 64 years.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Pamela Sue (JD) Schlieman of Durham, North Carolina, Beth Anne (Mark) Mittelberg of Morton, Illinois, Paul Douglas (Fran) Hein of Indianapolis, Indiana and Judy Lorraine (Peter) Sommerville of Simpsonville, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Mervyn (Johnnye) Swanson and a stillborn brother Merle.

She committed her life to Jesus Christ as a young adult and was quietly passionate in her love for her family and their following the way of Christ. Her pride and joy in addition to the children are 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. The grandchildren include Joel (Rebecca) Schlieman, and Kelli (Brandon) (Schlieman) Weyand of Cary, North Carolina, Jacob Schlieman of Lillington, North Carolina, Karena Mittelberg Etters of St. Louis, Missouri, Julia Mittelberg of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Alexander Hein and Kristin Vitale of Indianapolis, Indiana, Caleb (Amanda) Sommerville of Kansas City, Missouri, and Megan (Zach)(Sommerville) Meyer of Aplington, Iowa.

She taught Home Economics in Perry High School, Montezuma High School and as a substitute teacher for years. In addition she taught classes on sewing, served as a nutritionist at Head Start and in a nursing home. She conducted longitudinal telephone surveys for the University of Michigan Survey Research Center, and received the Iowa Governor’s volunteer award for her service teaching reading skills at Hawkeye Community College. She and her husband were adventurous travelers in the US and many foreign countries. She accompanied her husband on nine volunteer projects in under-developed countries teaching family budgeting to homemakers in Kyrgyzstan and nutrition consulting at the Agricultural Institute a residential post-secondary school in Chimoio, Mozambique, Africa. Verlee was an avid sports fan especially of the ISU Cyclone basketball and football teams.

She was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, teaching adult Christian education classes and participating in mission trips to Mexico and post-Katrina New Orleans. She was a member of PEO, served on the Friends of the Library board and the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Friends of the Symphony Board. She received the Iowa State University Alumni Club Service Key Award for service to the community that honors the University and its alumni.
