Fred Hersey, 85, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, May 21, 2017 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born March 1, 1932 in Grundy County, Iowa, son of John and Tillie Huisman Hersey. Fred graduated from New Hartford High School in 1950.
Fred served in the US Air Force from 1952-1956. He married Phyllis J. Mark June 9, 1957 in Dike, Iowa. She died February 6, 2009. Fred worked for Waterloo Fire Rescue for 30 years, retiring in 1988 as a Lieutenant. He also delivered for Allied Van Lines for 20 years.
He was a member of New Beginnings First Wesleyan Church since 1962 where he ushered and volunteered, and a member of the American Legion. He and Phyllis vacationed in Mission, Texas for many years. He enjoyed fishing at his cabins in Waterloo and Minnesota.
Fred is survived by a son, Mark (Candy) Hersey of Waterloo; a grandson, Colton Hersey of Waterloo, and four sisters, Jane Rice of Waverly, Minnie (Fred) Feckers of Clarksville, Betty Ehmen of Waterloo, and Gloria Card of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; a grandson, Cody Hersey; a brother, John Hersey, and a sister, Mabel Gillett.
