Biography--

Thomas Halse, 84, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Ravenwood Specialty Care.

He was born on February 15, 1933, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Maggie Johnson Halse. He married Dorothy Vick on Nov. 8, 1958, at Hauges Lutheran Church, Canoe Township. She died Feb. 5, 1999.

He graduated from Decorah High School in 1953. After 33 years, he retired in 1992 from John Deere as a set-up man. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. He was a member of the local VFW Post 1623, Waterloo Eagles Club Aerie 764 and AA.

Thomas enjoyed playing cards at the Eagles Club and volunteered twice a week at Horizon Treatment Center at Covenant Medical Center.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Jim) Heinz of Shorewood, Minn., and Roxanne Gilles of Waterloo; five grandchildren: Sarah (Scott) Byron, Angela (Aaron) Maenke, Matthew Gilles, Kari Gilles and Chad Gilles; eight great-grandchildren, Ben, Max and Will Byron, Tristin, Drew and Owen Gilles, Belle Liesl-Gilles, and Gavin Maenke; two sisters, Margaret Myers of Sequim, Wash., and Lois Schroeder of Port Angeles, Wash.; a brother, Roger of Decorah; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Halse of Decorah.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Edward.
