Obituary for Cletus L. Schmit

Cletus L. “Clete” Schmit, 85, of Gilbertville, Iowa, died Saturday, May 13, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, of Bile Duct Cancer.

He was born November 23, 1931 on the family farm in Jesup, son of Valentine “Val” and Matilda Mangrich Schmit. Clete graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Gilbertville in 1949. He was a Corporal in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.

Clete married Marcella Pierce on August 20, 1956 at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Eagle Center. He was employed with Rath Packing Company until it closed in 1984 and farmed in the Gilbertville area. He was semi-retired but continued helping out.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters St. Mary’s Court 1099, where he was a State Chief Ranger, Knights of Columbus Council 700 and the American Legion Post 714, where he was a Past Commander.

Survivors include his wife, Marci; his children: Crystal (Dennis) Murphy of Central City, Cheryl (Jim) Hall of Centennial, Colorado, Gary (Anne) Schmit of Mason City, Daniel (Leta) Schmit of Jesup and Connie (Allen) Mangrich of Gilbertville; 19 grandchildren: Ryan (Candice), Becky (Greg) Simpson, Brock and Laurel Murphy, Nat, Terrin, Lyndi and Andie Hall, Ellie and George Schmit, Sarah (Tim) Secory and Matt Schneider, Jacob, Jonathan, Rachel and Caleb Schmit, and Troy, Jason (Emily) and Drew Mangrich; five great-grandchildren: Kellen and Keegan Murphy, Nora and Gregor Secory and Hallie Mangrich; a brother, Eugene Schmit of Gilbertville; a sister, Laurene Weiers of Phoenix, Arizona; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Schmit of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Callista Hall; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence (Mildred), Arnold (Gen), Irvin (Dorothy) and Edwin Schmit; and seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcella (Bill) Sadler, Martina, Viola (Al) Frost, Agatha (Joe) Thome, Irma (Frank) Kresser, Bev Schmit and Will Weiers.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the church, where there will be 3 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Orders of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, The Bosco System, American Legion Post 714 or Cedar Valley Hospice.
