Michael Carl Dennis was born on November 11, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa: the son of Dexter and Grace “Jean” (Hayes) Dennis. He graduated from East Waterloo High School in 1966.

Mike was inducted into the United States Army on December 2, 1968, during the Vietnam War, and served the 4th Infantry Division, 6th BN, 29th Artillery as cannonier and ammunition handler. He received a Purple Heart and was discharged on July 8, 1970. Mike attended Bear Brakes, Frame and Wheel Alignment School in 1971. He owned and operated Mike’s Brake and Front End in Waterloo for 18 years. Mike was employed at Midtown Development prior to his retirement.

Mike was affiliated with AMVETS Post 19 and served Commander from 1997-1999. He was also on the Honor Guard. Mike was affiliated with the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Robert Anderson Camp #33, Waterloo and served as Commander for six years.

Mike was married to Judy Sadler on September 5, 1970; they later divorced. He was united in marriage to Patricia Kohls on February 14, 2001. Mike was affiliated with the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #11 and served as Treasurer/Adjutant from 1994, for many years. He was a chartered member of the American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 861 of Waterloo and the National 4th Infantry Division Association. Mike was affiliated with the Waterloo Memorial Board and served as Treasurer from 1996, for many years. He also was affiliated with the Waterloo Memorial Hall Commission.

Mike passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes at the age of 68.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Terry Dennis and a step-son Billy Kohls.

Mike is survived by his wife Patricia of Waterloo; a daughter Jennifer Dennis of Dunkerton; a son Preston (Alana) Dennis of Colorado Springs; two grandchildren, Xander and Xia Dennis; three brothers: Daniel (Joanne) Dennis of Waterloo, Jeffrey Dennis of Waterloo and James Dennis of New Braunfels, Texas; by two sisters: Rosanne (John) Fratzke of Papillion, Nebraska and Patricia Vogt of Waterloo; and by a step-son Johnny Kohls of Waterloo.

Mike enjoyed rebuilding cars, car restoration and modification. Mike also liked auto racing and traveling the road with Red Dralle.
