Fr. David T Fenelon

November 28, 1930 - November 17, 2016

WATERLOO, IOWA – Fr. David T. Fenelon, 85, of Waterloo, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Rosewood Estates in Waterloo.

He was born on November 28, 1930, in Waterloo, the son of Raymond and Oretta (Kirchoff) Fenelon.

He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Waterloo and was employed in engineering with John Deere for 13 years. He attended seminaries in Elkhorn, Nebraska, Conception, Missouri, Washington, DC, and Collegeville, Minnesota. He obtained degrees in Philosophy, Education, Theology, Cultural Anthropology and Special Education.

He was ordained May 29, 1970 in St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. He served parishes in Pierre, South Dakota, Devil’s Lake, North Dakota and Dillon, Montana prior to joining the Diocese of Des Moines in 1976, where he served as Pastor of St. Columbanus in Weston, Drake University Newman Parish in Des Moines, St. Patrick’s in Bayard and St. Joseph’s in Jamaica, Iowa. He then helped in several Waterloo parishes, including Blessed Sacrament and Queen of Peace.

He is survived by a nephew, nieces, and brother-in-law, Loren Steimel of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul; and two sisters, Kathleen Smith and Ruth Steimel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation will be on Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls. Visitation also from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Catholic Church Extension Society of the USA, 150 S. Wacker Dr. Ste. 2000, Chicago, IL 60606.

Father Fenelon was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the Lions Club, National Honor Society, NRTA of AARP and a member of Hospice of Cedar Valley.
