Wendo Wayne Freese (1925-2017)

WATERLOO, IOWA – Wendo Wayne Freese, age 91, of Waterloo, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017, at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center, under the care of UnityPoint Hospice.

Wendo was born on November 18, 1925, in rural Shiloh Township, Grundy County, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Muller) Freese. Wendo’s Mother passed away in 1928, and his Father later married Grace Weichers, who helped raise the family. He attended Colfax #5 rural country school.

On May 3, 1946, he enlisted in the US Army. He was stationed in the Philippines, serving with the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron. He received his Honorable discharge from the Army Air Corps on October 21, 1947.

He married Gladys Noel in 1946 and they later divorced. He married Mary (Sherman) Franck on November 14, 1992. She preceded him in death on April 7, 2001.

He worked for 39 years at Clay Equipment in Cedar Falls, Iowa, retiring in 1986.

Wendo was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Waterloo, IA; a life time member of the Cedar Falls Amvet Post #49; and a 40 year member of the Elks Club. Wendo was an avid baseball fan, a bowler, loved fishing and playing golf with his friends. He was very proud of his Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC in May 2011.

Wendo is survived by his sister, Vaneda Doyen of Wellsburg, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife and brothers: Harley, Clarence, Melvin, Kenneth and Arnold Freese.

Private services and burial will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa, at a later date. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.
