Biography--

Richard J. "Dick" Paxson, 81, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, on Sunday, April 9, 2017, of natural causes.

He was born December 2, 1935 in Marshalltown, the son of Oliver and Margaret Springer Paxson. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1953 and received his Bachelors degree in Business Education in 1961 from Iowa State Teachers College.

Dick was a corporal in the United States Marines Corps and was honorably discharged in 1956. In 2014, he made the Cedar Valley Honor Flight accompanied by his son, Phillip, also a Veteran.

He married Barbara J. Burnham September 1, 1957, in Marshalltown.

Dick was a partner in the Paxson-Harty-Guss Insurance Agency in Waterloo for 36 years. He served as Black Hawk County Magistrate for 20 years, retiring in 2007. He was honored by the Black Hawk County Bar Association as Person of the Year in 2008 and served on the Magistrate Appointing Committee until the time of his death.

Dick was a member and past president of the Waterloo Independent Insurance Agents. He was also a longtime member of the Elks Club, Lions Club, and had served on the Sunnyside Country Club board.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Joseph (Kelley) of Cedar Falls and Phillip (Debbie) of Bellevue; a daughter, Ann (George) Kuhter of Toledo; a sister, Judy (Don) Stalzer of Haverhill; a brother, Dennis of Marshalltown; and six grandchildren: Ben and Alex Paxson, Joe and Sam Kuhter, Amber Dullard and Jennifer Paxson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer and a sister, Betty Shutt.

Dick enjoyed many trips to Deadwood, South Dakota, with his wife and other family members and friends. Dick was a golf enthusiast and avid spectator of collegiate football and basketball especially the University of Northern Iowa sporting events. He enjoyed playing billiards and was a master at table tennis. He enjoyed playing cards with the same group of friends for over 40 years.

He made daily trips to his office until the very last days of his life. Dick’s greatest joy was to be surrounded by family especially his grandchildren and good friends to celebrate anything or nothing at all. Dick’s humor and quick wit will be dearly missed by all those who knew him well.
