Biography--

Betty Marie (Jensen, Runyan) Van Kerckhove died Monday, August 8, 2016 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

She was born January 27, 1921 in Dysart, Iowa, daughter of Hans Harold and Ruth Clare True Jensen. Her family moved to Waterloo when she was two years old. Betty attended Waterloo Schools and graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1939. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

She married Dale L. Runyan in 1943. He passed away in 1977. Betty then married Frank W. “Bud” Van Kerckhove in 1985 and together they spent many years traveling the United States and abroad.

Betty worked at the Waterloo Savings Banking, retiring after 36 years as Vice President in charge of the Accounting Department in 1985. During World War II, Betty worked for the Higgins Boat Company in New Orleans where the PT boats were made.

She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, PEO Chapter FE, Waterloo Womens’ Club, Iowa Business Women and Elklets. Betty was an avid counter cross stitcher and loved her work at the Waterloo Savings Bank.

Betty is survived by her husband, Bud, of Waterloo; two daughters, Carol Wisniewski of Manassas, Virginia, and Suzanne (Michael) Luers of Loudon, Tennessee; a stepson, Bruce (Cheryl) Van Kerckhove of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two stepdaughters, Rebecca “Becky” (Jim) McCarter of Columbia, Missouri, and Barbara Earles (Dean Tetter) of Urbandale, Iowa; a niece, Karen Jensen of Solon, Iowa; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Dale Runyan; her brother, Delbert Jensen; sister-in-law, Frances Jensen, and son-in-law, James Wisniewski.
