Committal following services at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah, Iowa (approx. 1:30 p.m.) with military rites by Iowa Army National Guard and Decorah Area Honor Guard

Biography--

Gerald Duane "Jerry" Lien born February 11, 1941, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at UnityPoint--Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of heart failure.

He was born in Decorah, Iowa, and graduated from Decorah High School in 1959. Jerry served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964 and was stationed at Butzbach, Germany. He developed a love for all things German and his Norwegian ancestry. He married Mar˙ke Zwingel (from Nuremberg, Germany) in Decorah in May of 1966 and they later divorced.

Jerry had worked at John Deere Waterloo from 1961 until his retirement in 1998.

Many thanks to Joyce Redman for being his companion for over 20 years, and his niece Lynn Anders for supporting his needs late in life.

Jerry is survived by his son Brandon Lien (Cedar Falls, Iowa), daughter Renate Lien (Woburn, Mass.), and two grandsons, Jake Lien and Austin Lien.

He is also survived by two sisters, Barb Burreson of Elk Run Heights, Iowa and Ethel Deck of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Melvin Theodore and Mabel Berthina (Blekeberg) Lien; a sister Lorraine Scholl of Decorah; and two brothers, Vernon Lien of Cedar Rapids and Allen Lien of Decorah.
