Biography--

Richard A. “Dick” Garthoff, 89, of Waterloo died Friday, February 3, 2017 at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital.

He was born April 3, 1927, in Waterloo, son of Phillip W. and Lois Weldon Garthoff, Jr. He married Jean Marie Bisbee October 20, 1946 in Waterloo. She died August 12, 2004. Dick graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1945.

He was a Patternmaker at John Deere for 40 years, retiring in 1984. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Dick was Secretary of the Waterloo Bowling Association in the 1960s, a member of Waterloo American Legion Post 138 for 49 years, and a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church where he held many positions.

His Great-Grandchildren called him “Papa Uh-Oh.” His family was the most important thing in his life. Dick enjoyed playing golf since he was 10 years old and was a Caddie at the original Sunnyside Country Club. He was a Civil War and history expert who loved to plan vacations and travel, especially to South Padre Island. He also enjoyed music and listening to his albums.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Chuck) Stejskal of Waterloo, and Brenda (James) Everts of Parkersburg; a brother, Eugene (Lucille) Garthoff of Elk Run Heights; a sister, Marlys Timmer of Elk Run Heights; four grandchildren, Corey (Sarah) Everts of Richland Center, WI, Christina (Christopher) Stejskal Grier of Kalona, IA, Sarah (Curt) Everts Rodgers of Kalona, IA, and Andrew (Amanda) Everts of Holland, IA, and six great-grandchildren, Daniel, Hannah & Jackson Rodgers, Greeley & Maesa Everts, and William Grier.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; two sisters, Shirley Seamans and Judy Kay Garthoff; a brother, Jack Garthoff, and a great‑granddaughter, Aurora Jean Everts.
