Obituary for Dr. J. Eugene "Gene" Goldberg

Dr. J. Eugene Goldberg, 87, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 14 at Friendship Village.

He was born May 30, 1929 in Sioux City, son of Samuel and Ida Cohen Goldberg. He married Janet Epstein on August 24, 1952 in Sioux City. She died October 4, 2016.

Gene graduated in 1947 from Central High School in Sioux City. He received his Pre-Med and Medical Degree at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1954. After Service in the Navy as a Medical Officer with the 1st Marine Division from 1955-1957, he became a Resident in anesthesia at University Hospital of Iowa City. He was a staff anesthesiologist at Schoitz Memorial Hospital for 30 years. He was president of the Iowa Society of Anesthesiology, Chief of Staff at Schoitz Hospital, past president of Sons of Jacob Synagogue, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Waterloo Downtown Rotary Club.

Survivors include five sons: Stanton (Lisa) Goldberg of Dallas, Texas, Michael (Sheri) Goldberg of Marion, Gary (Yetta) Goldberg of Campbell, California, Alan (Beth) Goldberg of Austin, Texas, and Joseph (Lynda) Goldberg of Wheaton, Illinois; ten grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Estelle Weiss of Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Sons of Jacob Synagogue with burial in the Beth Olem section of Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Gene loved and followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Pittsburg Pirates. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home and playing golf.
