Obituary for Rosemary "Rosie" Ralston

Rosemary “Rosie” Friedl Ralston, 93, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 14, at Lakeview Landing.

She was born Dec. 8, 1923 in Waverly, daughter of Philip and Mary Rose Schares Friedl. She married Milo F. Ralston May 19, 1949 in Waterloo. He died August 16, 2011.

Rosemary graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterloo in 1942 and St. Joseph College of Nursing in Omaha in 1947. She was a pediatric nurse at Covenant Hospital for 22 years, retiring in 1985.

Survivors include: two sons, James (Delia) Ralston and Michael Ralston both of Waterloo; two daughters, Terry (Jim) Townsend of Cedar Falls, and Marianne (Jim) Christensen of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Miranda) Townsend, Sam (Natalie) Christensen, Chuck (Alison) Christensen, Peter Christensen, Elizabeth (Jason) Groom, Tom Ralston and Margaret (Matt Nappe) Ralston; five great-granddaughters, Adalyne, Emerson, Carrisa, Aliza and Eleanor; a brother, Msgr. Francis Friedl of Dubuque; and a sister, Mary Billings of California.

Preceded in death by: two sons, Mark and Scott Ralston; a granddaughter, Gretchen Christensen; three brothers, Philip, James and Thomas Friedl; three sisters, Catherine Porter, Sr. Mary Margaret and Shirley Kapler.

Services will be 10:30 Monday, March 20, at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgway, where there will be a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary.

Memorials: Cedar Valley Hospice, Friendship Village, Salvation Army or the church.

Rosie was a volunteer with the Red Cross, sang in the Resurrection Choir, was a member of the Rosary Society and was a devoted Catholic. She and her husband enjoyed traveling with their six children in a car for two weeks every year.
