Betty Lou Nielson

July 8, 1938 - May 19, 2016

Betty Lou (Schutte) Nielson was born July 8, 1938 in Waterloo, daughter of Raymond and Marie (Schmidt) Schutte. She graduated from Waterloo East High School with the Class of 1956. Betty married Robert Briden in 1957 and the couple had two children together. They were later divorced.

In 1973 Betty was united in marriage to Albert Nielson. She worked in public schools in Iowa and Illinois, at the Chicago Title Insurance Company, then in the Black Hawk County Recorder’s Office from which she retired in 2000. For Betty her faith in Jesus Christ was the most important thing in life and she lived out her faith with her family, friends and in all that she did. She was very involved at Immanuel Lutheran Church where she attended school and was later married. Betty taught Sunday School and led Bible Studies at church and with her close friends.

She loved family gatherings and worked every year to reunite the Schutte and Schmidt families. Betty loved to cross stitch, play piano and sing in the choir. She played cards (bridge and pinochle) with close friends. Betty’s favorite color was “Betty Lou” Blue. She was a fan of the Chicago Bulls and Bears before it was popular among women.

Betty died at the age of 77 years on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Windsor Specialty Care in Waterloo, where she had resided since March of 2015. She is preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; husband, Albert who passed away on March 8, 2014; and an infant grandson, Jesup Briden. Betty is survived by her four sons: Kevin (Julie) Briden of Waterloo, Jon (Tina) Briden of Naperville, IL, Randy (Jody) Nielson of Baldwin, WI, and Matt Nielson of Chicago; a daughter, Lisa Nielson-Barron of Haddon Township, NJ; 17 grandchildren: Lynn (Joe) Bauer, Leah (Jesse) Hoffman, Layla (Jeremiah) Meyer, Bijan Nogrehkar, Matthew Nogrehkar, Jacob Briden, Sarah (Reese) Murphey, Rachel (Jason) Vanderscoff, Vanessa (Steve) Carlson, Ann (Armon Farrari) Nielson, Elizabeth (Tommy) Bardis, Grace Nielson, and Delise Barron, Joanna (Fahim Khan) Barron, Tommy Barron and Becca Barron; nine great-grandchildren: Levi Bauer, Isaac Bauer, Riley Kress, Keenan Andreas, Wyatt Murphey, Walker Murphey, Willow Murphey, Matthew Vanderscoff, and Finley Bardis; two brothers, Terry (Sue) Schutte of Cedar Falls and Gene (Ingrid) Schutte of Dysart; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
