Valeria Ann Kuchynka Martin left this world peacefully for a better place on April 8, 2016. She was born on February 1, 1927 in Traer, Iowa where she grew up enjoying the farm life and her Czech heritage. Valeria was an Iowan through and through and enjoyed the changing seasons. She did enjoy traveling and visited her far flung family and relatives all over the United States and abroad.

Valeria had many interests but her deepest love was her family. She worked in the war time as a telephone operator, raised her family and then devoted a number of years driving a school bus for the Waterloo school district. She cared for her little charges often taking a bus load to Dairy Queen at the end of the year. She volunteered for many years at Covenant and was a member of St Edward’s Catholic Church. She also raised and sold apples from her farm and still had time for golf, bridge and bowling.

Valeria met her beloved husband, Lawrence William Martin when she lived next door to the fire station where Lawrence was a Waterloo fireman. They were married for 67 years and raised four children and have 8 grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Lawrence Martin who resides at Bridges in Waterloo, Iowa as well as Colleen Martin Olson (Robert Olson), daughter; Gregory K. Martin ( LeeAnn), son; Maurita Martin (David Pennington), Daughter and Stuart Martin (Coleen), son. Their grandchildren are: Martin W. Fleming, Moiri P. Fleming, Cory L. Olson, Jessica L. Pennington, Justin L. Pennington, Miles Martin, Madeleine Martin and Sydney Irene Martin. She was preceded in death by her mother, Albina Kuchynka, her father Jerald Kuchynka and her beloved sisters, Valentina Kuchynka Martin and Elizabeth Kuchynka McGilligan and 5 step grandchildren.

A beautiful mother, wife, grandmother and friend, she will be sorely missed as she lent joy, humor and a sense of adventure to our lives.

A private entombment was held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at the Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. A mass and celebration of her life to be held in June. Please note that date and time will be announced.

Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is assisting the family.
