Thomas D. Summerhays

December 6, 1926 - April 7, 2016

Thomas D. Summerhays, 89, of Waterloo, died Thursday, April 7 at Covenant Medical Center ER.

He was born December 6, 1926, in Waterloo, the son of Donald and Marion Betz Summerhays. He married Kate Pierce in June 1949 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Waterloo, and they later divorced.

Thomas graduated from Sacred Heart High School and served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was owner and operator of Midwest Pattern for 55 years, retiring in 2001.

Survivors include: five sons; Walt (Chris) of Waterloo, Mike of Waterloo, Paul of Evansdale, Jim of Waterloo, and Steve (Danette) of Waterloo; five grandchildren; a brother, David (Marilyn) of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Valeria “Tootie” Feller or Redding, Calif.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Summerhays; a grandson, Tommy Summerhays; three brothers, Joe, Jerry, and Richard Summerhays; two sisters, Jackie Boderman and Donna Griffin.

Services: Tuesday, April 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with inurnment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the church by Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evandsdale Amvets Post 31, assisted by the Air Force Honor Guard. Public visitation Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Visitation also one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
