Henry “Shorty” “Hank” Gerdis, Jr.

Biography--

Henry “Shorty” “Hank” Gerdis, Jr., 92, of Elk Run Heights, died Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Ravenwood Specialty Care of natural causes.

He was born May 7, 1923 in Titonka, Iowa, son of Henry and Minnie (Meyers) Gerdis, Sr.

He married Berniece Brandt in 1955 in Waterloo, and they were later divorced. He married Mildred “Millie” Dehl on May 9, 1981 in Nashua; she preceded him in death August 28, 1997. He married Callie R. Jones on October 28, 1998 in Milton, FL; she preceded him in death. He married Doris Mae (Gnade) Niedermann on December 4, 2009 in Raymond.

He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force during World War II and Vietnam.

He worked in maintenance and as a foreman for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 11 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1623, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, and the El Kahir Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife, Doris of Elk Run Heights; one son, Wayne Gerdis of Tennessee; three stepsons, Virgil Gann of New Mexico, Randall Gann of Florida, Rick Niedermann of Waterloo; six stepdaughters, Nancy (James) Dewater of Florida, Geri Sharp of Georgia, Pam Kuecker of Waterloo, Becky (Tom) Nehl of Waverly, Marla Heath of Waterloo, Karla Niedermann of Waterloo; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and one sister, Betty (Paul) Gerdis of Mason City.

Preceded in death by: his parents and his wives.

Monday, March 7, 2016 at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel

Military Rites will be conducted by the Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail
