Dr. James “Jim” Martin Girsch, 65, of Waterloo died Monday, February 29, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born July 31, 1950, in Iowa City, son of Dr. William J. and Kathleen Murphy Girsch. He married Dr. Elizabeth Stevens September 14, 1986 in Salem, W.Va. and they were later divorced.

Jim graduated from Waterloo West High School, the University of Iowa and the University of Toronto with a PhD. He was employed at the University of Michigan revising and editing medical dictionaries and in Washington, D.C. editing and doing research.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Caroline (Ben) Howden of Nashville, Tenn. and Martha Kathleen Girsch of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a grandson, Jack Howden; his mother of Waterloo; five brothers, Dr. William J. Jr. (Kathy) of Salem, Ore., Michael “Mick” (Jan) of Cedar Falls, Martin (Laurie) of Sarasota, Fla., Christopher (Hiromi) of Waterloo and John (Betty) of Portland, Ore.; and a sister, Mary Jane Girsch of Portland, Ore.

Preceded in death by his father in 2002 and a brother, Dr. Timothy Girsch in 1999.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4-7 pm Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or St. Edward’s Catholic Church.

Jim was a lover of the arts and enjoyed playing mandolin and guitar with his friends.
