Death of Mrs. Cotton

We are again called to the melancholy duty of chronicling the death of one more of our oldest, most honored and respected citizens, Mrs. Mary Cotton, consort of the late Cyrus Cotton, who died early last spring.

Mrs. Cotton was a native of Grason County, Virginia and was born April 15, 1797. Her death took place Nov. 2, 1872, aged 75 years, 6 months, and 18 days. Mrs. Cotton was married in her native State, in the year 1815, to the husband which she survived but a few months. In 1820, she joined the baptist church, and from that time to the hour of her death - over a half century - she was an exemplary and worthy member of the Church. About the year 1821, she removed from Virginia to Marion County, Indiana and settled in the wild wilderness of the State near where the Capitol of the State now stands. Here her residence continued until the year 1852, when she removed to Vinton, Benton County, Iowa, and in 1863 removed to this place.

Her loss is deeply felt by a large circle of relatives and friends. Her large benevolence and great charity, won for her in every community in which she has resided, the most profound love and esteem from all those who became personally acquainted with her.
