He weighed only 3 lbs when born at home, in rural Black Hawk County, Iowa, during a blizzard on February 9, 1936, son of Arthur C. and Elsie (Harting) Wellman. Curt attended the former Jubilee School and then graduated from La Porte City High School in 1954 and served in the US Army from 1955-1957 and received several accolades. He was united in marriage with Leona Steffens in 1959 and they later divorced. Julie Simons has been his life partner for the last 16 years.

After returning from the Army, Curt started farming with his father and his brother Ray. Curt was President and owner of Wellman Farms Inc. for many years, which was a large grain and livestock farm with interests across several counties. He was co-owner of W & W Livestock Enterprises, Inc., a hog farm and buying station and was most recently president and owner of W & W Farms Inc.

His love for cattle and the farm continued throughout his life. Due to the death of a business partner and friend, he became sole owner of Estep Motors in La Porte City and operated the business from 1981-1986. Following the sale of the dealership he worked for a large grain elevator and agricultural dealership.

He then worked at Cardinal Motors in Vinton and was a sales representative at Witham Auto in La Porte City for over 10 years. Curt was a man of high integrity and was loved dearly by his family, friends and community. He will be sincerely missed by all.
